Koutouloufari was probably first settled during the Middle Ages in order to escape the frequent pirate raids along the northern coast, a frequent migration inland for Cretans of that time, who would often seek higher ground and places less exposed to seafaring marauders. Today, Koutouloufari has direct and easy access to the sea and is a popular and picturesque destination —while still maintaining its distinctive traditional architecture, colour and warm hospitality. Take your time to stroll along the village’s narrow cobbled streets and alleyways lined by old stone houses and flower-filled courtyards. It is also well worth visiting the Church of Agios Vassilios (St. Basil), which was built in 1840 over an older church dating to the14th century. In Koutouloufari you will also find numerous traditional tavernas, cafés, bars and shops featuring wonderful items to bring home as souvenirs of your vacation.
